Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I choose Sutherland Landscaping?
At Sutherland Landscaping, we believe great landscapes are built on strong relationships. Our team focuses on thoughtful design, durable craftsmanship, and long-term care—so your outdoor space doesn’t just look beautiful, it works beautifully. We train our crews through our SHAPE values: Servanthood, Hard Work through Teamwork, Attention to Detail, Pursuit of Mastery, and Enjoying the Work, and it shows in every garden bed, patio, and pathway we build. We take your property personally.
How much does a Landscape design & build project cost?
Costs depend on the scope of work, materials, and site conditions, but custom outdoor projects typically start around $10,000 and can range to $150,000 or more for full transformations. We prioritize honest pricing, detailed proposals, and clear expectations—no surprises. We’ll guide you through options that balance aesthetics, function, and budget.
What does the process for a custom landscape look like?
- Consultation & Site Visit – We listen to your needs, assess grading, drainage, sun exposure, access, and style preferences.
- Design & Budget Alignment – You receive a custom plan tailored to how you want to use your space.
- Construction – Our trained team builds your project with precision and respect for your property.
- Final Walkthrough & Warranty – We walk through your space together, answer questions, and set you up for long-term care.
How long do custom landscape projects take?
Depending on the size of the project, build times range from 1–8 weeks. Weather, material availability, and site complexity can affect timelines. We provide a construction schedule before starting and update you regularly so you always know what’s happening.
What sort of landscape projects does Sutherland do?
We specialize in custom outdoor spaces that balance beauty, function, and longevity. Our services include:
- Residential front & backyard transformations
- Patios and outdoor living areas
- Retaining walls and contouring
- Drainage, grading, and lawn installation
- Garden bed design & planting
- Walkways, steps, driveways & parking pads
- Water features and custom stonework
What if I already have a design?
That’s great! We’re happy to work with your existing design as long as it’s functional for your property. If needed, we can make practical adjustments (for grading, drainage, plant suitability, etc.) to ensure it can be constructed properly and stand the test of time.
What kind of hardscapes can Sutherland build?
We build durable hardscapes that are made to withstand our coastal weather, including:
- Paver and natural stone patios & walkways
- Retaining walls (block or natural stone)
- Steps, driveways, and landings
- Fire pit areas and outdoor living spaces
- Stone borders, edging & structural features
What’s the difference between softscaping and hardscaping?
Softscaping includes the living elements: plants, lawns, soil, mulch, and garden beds.
Hardscaping includes the structural elements: patios, walls, steps, stonework, and pathways.
The best landscapes blend both—plants soften and enhance stonework, while structures define space and create usability.
What’s the best time of year to start a new landscape project?
Planning can begin any time of year, but builds are typically scheduled from early spring through late fall. The earlier we design and schedule your project, the better we can secure materials and timelines. Winter is an ideal time to start planning and designing work.
What are the benefits of professional landscaping?
Professional landscaping improves curb appeal, increases property value, solves drainage and usability issues, and creates a more enjoyable outdoor space to live in. A good design also reduces long-term maintenance and ensures plants thrive in their location. Quality landscaping is both a financial investment and a lifestyle upgrade.
Where does Sutherland Landscaping work?
We proudly serve the Fraser Valley, including Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Langley and surrounding communities. For large projects, we may travel slightly beyond these areas—just ask!
What hours will the Sutherland crew be working on my landscape project?
Crews typically work Monday–Friday, between 7:30 AM and 5:00 PM. If weather or schedules require, we may request extended hours—but only with your approval.
Do I need to be home while the landscaping crew is here?
No, you’re welcome to go about your day. We only need access to outdoor work areas and outdoor taps or power if required. We keep communication clear so you always know what’s being done.
How many people will be working on my landscape at a time?
Most projects have a crew of 2–6 people, depending on the size of the job. Larger builds may require specialized equipment operators or additional team members.
How often do I need to re-mulch my garden beds?
Most garden beds need fresh mulch every 1–2 years. Mulch protects soil, reduces weeds, and improves overall plant health. Some high-sun or windy areas may need top-ups more frequently.
